An imperfect beauty
During 2011, I travelled throughout the Western Cape interviewing over 30 fascinating craft producers. The intention was to mark the tenth anniversary of the not-for-profit Cape Craft + Design Institute (CCDI) through the stories of the designer makers (which I wrote) with other contributors providing essays and outlining key lessons learnt.

At the time the image of the Western Cape craft sector had reached an all-time high, and the CCDI had grown from only two people 10 years previously, to a specialist team of 30 permanent staff. The concept was to link the craft producers to 10 different regions of the Western Cape, and to show how they were inspired by the scenery, natural materials and traditions of their varying locations. So I interviewed everyone from a potter in the winelands to a bird carver on the West Coast, candle makers in the Overberg to a felt producer on the N1. Beautiful photographs were taken by the super-talented Eric Miller, and I show a few snaps I took en route.
